eThoughts : Emphasize the Promise and Achievement Will Come
It’s a cute title isn’t it? But, I guess I can’t just let it go at that, though I once thought a book of titles might just work (during those days I could come up with snappy titles but was too lazy to actually write anything having to do with the title).
I digress. But actually it was to make a point. So I guess it only seems like a digression. Or maybe it was a digression that I realized I could work into a point. Or maybe a point, by definition is a digression. Maybe it depends on one’s point of view. Hmmm, a point of view includes both the view and the point. So a point of view is like an eddy that still includes the essential waters of the main river.
All right, I’m back and feeling appropriately smug. Maybe I was never gone, just linked out a bit longer. Oh, never mind.
Just what is the promise?
We’ve all got an idea of substance and achievement, even if we don’t all agree. But if there is a promise, maybe it is not a matter of agreement, but more a matter of recognition. So, is there an essence common to all, and does that essence hold a promise?
Good grief, an age-old question attempted to be answered in a page more or less? Actually less by now—all these digressions you know. Certainly the question has been answered before, in both clear and obscure ways. But revisiting the question and the answer to the question, is an essential activity central to both question and answer. All right, it seems like I’m headed towards the obscure way.
Let’s try this: If we let go of everything in our minds, hold on to no thing, we are still left with something. All of us. I’ll call it awareness. I’m not arguing degrees here, I’m stating the essential essence, the Great Permeator—that which flows through all of us to one degree or another, regardless of what we are, have, or know.
For each of us individually and for all of us communally, we have this home. This home is the promise—it is the base. We may gain or lose degrees of it, but while we are alive anyway (in this manner I get to avoid all the pre- and post-physical assertions), we cannot be totally voided of some form of awareness. And that’s why it’s a promise. Admittedly, it’s a funny kind of promise since it is always changing, but a promise it is since some form of it will always be there for us.
So, when you want to achieve something, what and where is the best place to not only start, but to check into from time to time? Home. Don’t create from a creation, create from home. Since home changes, commensurate with our degree of awareness, it is always the best place to check in to see where one is really at. And the most efficient way to get somewhere, is to know where one is at to begin with. That’s the best each of us can do, and that makes it a rock-solid contribution to ourselves and to the tribe—each and every time, and regardless of our degree of awareness.
Not a bad promise, not a bad place (though awareness is not like a place). It seems like the promise and the home are rock solid. Now we just have to quit ignoring the connection and confusing the digressions, entertainments, and dramas of our awareness as our home—though the digressions, like my playing at the beginning of this musing, can be lots of fun (okay—maybe fun for some).
That’s about it, and in just a bit more than a page. Well, we really don’t want to spend all of our time reading and writing do we—wasn’t there someplace we wanted to check into?
